IC Information:
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Character: Thancred Waters
Canon point: 5.3 Post-Shadowbringers. A few days after returning to the Souce, he goes to sleep that night and wakes up on the Ship.
Canon intensity: A lot of off-screen implicated violence and trauma. Sometimes it is shown on screen! There's war crimes, there's body horror, there's possession, there's... a lot of dark stuff. But there's also an ever-present plot of "This world should have ended. But so long as we keep getting back up and keeping holding on to hope, we'll get through it."
World information: Fantasy MMORPG. You've got magic and swords but you've also got guns. Thancred wields a gunblade that's inspired by Final Fantasy 8. The world has very diverse cultures. From fantasy France to fantasy Japan. You've also got ancient civilizations that used highly advanced technology. So there's AI and drones and stuff. You've also got real semi-physical deities if enough people pray and devote enough power to said beings. Thancred's kinda seen or heard of it all, at this point.
AU Information: Working on it a full fic series (and at least a post on his blog for an in depth outline), but here's the bare bones:
Canon but shifted slightly left due to... there are six Warriors of Light. One for each expansion (kind of. it got a little wonky by SHB). But anything that pertains to Thancred in particular all revolves around the WoL who he's known longer than all of the Scions. A Roegadyn woman by the name of Sthallona who was the 1.0 Warrior, and faked her death after the Calamity. Only for the two to reunite in Shadowbringers. It... didn't go well, but it got better. Overall it's still the same Thancred, just certain events didn't happen in his canon, he's somehow even more protective, and he's got double the resentment for Hydaelyn.
Character biofacts: No time-bubble in this AU, so Thancred is physically 36 while being 42 mentally (due to First shenanigans). Male, he/him. Human by all standards of the word.
About the character:
Growing up on the streets of Limsa Lominsa with no home to call his own was the first thing Thancred remembered. He was a young scrappy lad, malnourished and flighty. He learned what he could from the rogue's guild, earning his place by pick-pocketing from criminals.
There was also a young girl who kept him company. She was a pirate's daughter. A little renegade, three summers younger. He was her only friend, and she was his only real one. Thancred saved her from a group of men who tried to take her for ransom, and they were inseparable after that.
But then... he met Archon Louisoix. Or, well, he did pickpocket from him, too. But for some reason, the Elezen from Old Sharlayan wasn't mad at him. He was impressed. So impressed that he offered the young hyur a mentorship. And who was Thancred to say no? It got him off the streets, it got a regular schedule of food in his belly. He was a stray animal to be tamed. And he took the bait.
He left everything he knew behind. He was taught to hone his roguish skills and become a force to be reckoned with. He made friends (and rivals) with Louisoix's fellow students. He did everything he could to live up to the expectations placed on him.
And right behind him? The same girl. Sthallona, the mage who learned to combine White and Black magic before she knew what Red was. The woman who kept him in check from going too far. She became the Warrior of Light. Against her better judgement, of course. They were unbeatable. She was his sister.
He met an even younger girl: Ascilia. Not by choice, of course. He killed her father. Inadvertently, sure, but he blames himself for it. If he had diverted that rampant Goobbue, maybe she wouldn't have lost the only family she had left. So Thancred took her in. Alongside another woman, F'lhaminn, they became her guardians. He was her protector, she was his second sister.
And then the Calamity happened. Thancred begged Sthallona to come home if things looked like they wouldn't turn out. She promised she would.
She never came home.
Her name was on the list of the missing and the dead. But for five years, he kept searching for her. Never quite letting it go. No matter how much Urianger and Y'shtola tried to convince him to stop. He fell into his work, selling his body for information. Anything he could get his hands on. For the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, for Minfilia, for Sthallona.
He was nothing outside of his body. Thancred learned that from a young age. If he wasn't fighting or scouting or flirting, he was no use to people. That's what he convinced himself.
There were other Warriors of Light who took Sthallona's place. Some he got quite close to. A Lalafellin arcanist, an Au Ra warrior, a Miqo'te paladin. Even a set of Vieran twins joined the mix later on. They all worked their damnedest to follow Hydaelyn's call. And yet none of them patched up that hole in Thancred's heart.
He ended up in the Lifestream to protect the Scions (Thanks, Y'shtola). Losing partial sight in his left eye and his ability to manipulate aether was a small price to pay if it meant that the rest made it out alive. But then he found out that Minfilia was taken by Hydaelyn as a puppet. "The Word of the Mother", sure. He didn't believe that for a second. Why would a Goddess need a mortal's body to speak to her followers. He searched for her, too, just like he did his other sister. And just like before, she never turned up. Not until, of course, Urianger orchestrated to summon her. Just to save some adventurers that were never from the Source in the first place. It's... fine. He forgives Urianger eventually. But not without digging himself further into a reclusive hole.
While the Warriors traveled to Ala Mhigo and Doma to aid the fight against the Empire, Thancred stayed behind. He kept Urianger company when he could, but for the most part he was off doing what he knew best: Scouting for information. He found Krile after she was kidnapped. And he assisted in looking for clues about the not-dead Zenos case.
And then Thancred ends up on the First Shard. Drops cold in the middle of a meeting and his soul was ferried off by a mysterious man. 5 years before any of the others show up on a reflection of his home world. It was... surreal. A world devoid of night. So enveloped in Light aether that it made him sick for months.
The first two years were spent just coping with his situation. Learning about his surroundings (or what was left of them), picking up a new job that would better suit his needs to fight the Sin-Eaters (creatures infected so thoroughly with light aether that they became zombies)... Learning about the Oracle.
A series of girls... all named Minfilia? A coincidence, surely. That's what he told himself. Until he dug into it. Girls, all named Minfilia, with the selfsame blonde hair and the selfsame striking blue eyes. He... couldn't not try to see her for himself. But the problem was that she was trapped, like a bird in a cage, in a self-entitled city. A city so engulfed in grandeur that believed them above the rest of the First.
A series of girls all raised to fight the Sin-Eaters. Do nothing else but fight the Sin-Eaters. Thancred could sympathize with that, but he was decades older than these girls ever lasted.
Thancred couldn't leave her in that. Previous incarnations of the Oracle had already suffered it enough.
So he planned. He found his way in and rescued her. Not without bringing the ire of Eulmore on his head, but it was worth it. She was safer with him than she ever would be with her jailors.
He bounced between the rest of the First with her. Never staying in one place for too long, though perhaps lingering at Urianger's abode in Il Mheg the most. As much as he hated to admit, the land filled with pixies and fae was a hell of a lot safer than he would have liked. It was just him and this new Minfilia. He became her protector, a father figure, she was his charge.
He wasn't good to her. By no stretch of the word. Sure, she was safer with him. But he lead her to believe all he wanted was for her to die so his Minfilia could return. And... he did want that. He wanted his Minfilia back more than anything. And he let that show too much with the way he treated this Minfilia.
And then, along with the other Warriors, Sthallona returned. Fifteen years long dead, she showed up in the annex of the Crystarium. Thancred pinched himself.
Of all the jokes for the Twelve to play on him...
But she was real. She was alive. She... lied to him.
So, on top of trying to raise this teenage girl who shared his late sister's name and features, his second sister returned to him. He was elated, of course! But she broke the promise. She never came home. Instead she faked her death, ran away to the Dravanian Hinterlands. She became a new (albeit haunted) woman.
And Thancred had stayed the same.
He couldn't bring himself to hate her. He understood why she did it. She wanted to be dead to the world rather than fill the shoes of something she could not be. Sthallona helped him finally reconcile with that hole in his heart that was only made wider by the years.
The First was saved. Not without strife, of course, but it was saved. And after long nights of research, a miracle and a prayer, they returned home. Minfilia may be long gone. But Thancred has a daughter, now. Her name is Ryne. She's a girl with soft blue eyes and strawberry-blonde hair. And she would do anything to protect her home.
He couldn't be more proud.
Thancred goes to sleep that night on the Source with a little less heartache than before.
Abilities: Skilled fighter, adept in most bladed weapons. Has a degree in bullshitting; that is to say, he's spent most of his life dealing in subterfuge and acting the part of a playboy to gather information. Though, he doesn't do the latter very often anymore. Ever since his unfortunate foray into the Lifestream, he has been left devoid of aether manipulation. He still is quite sensitive to it, and can sense it, he just cannot use it.
Noteworthy items:
-> Your typical gunbreaker gear + gunblade.
-> A small pink ribbon tied onto the handle of said gunblade.
-> Lockpicking tools (not expecting them to be useful here, but he has them).
-> A few barrels worth of aether-charged cartridges he's now forced to use sparingly.
Mixed gender room ok?: yeah he doesn't care.
Player content notes/squicks: Heavy violence/excessive gore written in extreme detail (implication is fine, I just am a very visually inclined person and so I can see everything I read). Needles in eyes.
Anything else: not that i can think of!
